“Stepping out of default mode and making choices out of strength vs choices out of fear.”
Dr. David Rabin
Dr. David Rabin posits that maybe the pressure of having to know creates a box because we really don’t know what we are capable of.
The pressure to know is driven by our scholarly journey. In order to get the good marks, we were required to know the answers. Therefore knowing has been engrained in our thinking, so we stopped thinking. We regurgitate information fed to us without questioning its source and veracity.
What Dr. Rabin offers above leads us to reflect deeply on how our guidelines have been set. How the box was built for us to iterate solutions to fix our problems. It makes us reflect if we are indeed making decisions/choices based on fear, fear of failure, fear of ridicule.
In the end, how do we really know what we are capable of until we try.
As babies, we never really knew how fast we could really go when we first learned to walk. If we could go back into our memories from that moment when we first knew we had to stand up on our own 2 feet to move faster, what woud we hear in our self talk. Perhaps, it would be something like this:
" OK. Let's do this. One leg at at time. Grab that ledge. Pull up. Pull up. OK, I'm up. Let's do this one leg forward. There .... oh .... oh ... loosing balance ... ouch ... that hurt ... really hurts ... Ok hurts less now ... don'f feel the pain any more. OK, Let's do this. ... Grab that ledge ... "
Way back then, we did not know what we were capable of, even after we fell and got hurt. We stood up again making the CHOICE to do it again out of STRENGTH and not FEAR.
