Confidence In Decisions
Apr 20, 2021
As Limitless Leaders we are called to make decisions on a daily basis. Some decisions are easier than others. When the decision gets tougher the Limitless Leader requests or gathers more data. After all, more intelligent data can help guide us to the better solution. Here’s something to ponder.
There was a research that illustrates how five racehorse experts made decisions on which horse will win. On their first attempt, they were provided with only five criteria, they succeeded at a 17% rate and they were 19% confident in their picks.
In a subsequent races they were given five additional information pieces for them to make a pick. For five additional races, the results were at 17% however their confidence rate went more than double every time, at every subsequent race. The additional data did not add to their level of success in picking the winning horses.
We look for data to increase our level of confidence in our decision, additional data does not necessarily create a better decision. You have heard in your Journey the term analysis paralysis.
ANALYSIS PARALYSIS
In some instances, the Limitless Leader must make a decision with the data she is presented the with, when the variable of time is short.
In the end, the success rate is the same for that decision. Simply put, on that one decision you have 50% chance to succeed or to fail. The journey is to ensure you put more success than failures on your tracking sheet, right?
So what does the Limitless Leader look at when making decisions? I offer these steps to consider:
- Determine the speed of the decision that needs to be made
- Gather the data required in the time frame given
- Identify the options
- Analyze options
- Identify risks ( there are always to any decision )
- Determine ROI and KPI to measure success
- Decide - Execute
- Implement
- Measure
- Reassess. Go back to Step 2.
