Fear, Failure and Mediocrity
May 05, 2021
As we continue to face this ambiguous situation that the pandemic has created, we must learn to move from a state of Survival to a mindset of Revival.
The Limitless Leader understands that to revive means to become active or to flourish again. In becoming active, they move to take actions, taking steps to solve and resolve. The truth is that actions will lead to unwanted outcomes, sometimes called Failure.
What happens to you when you fail? In school, failing meant getting a bad grade. It was something most students avoid. This would explain how we abhor failure. When we failed we would not get the reward and sometimes we would get punished. Failure we were taught was something to avoid at all cost.
As a Limitless Leader, what culture of performance have you set within your teams and for yourself? One that punishes failure?
Consider this from Ex Disney CEO Michael Eisner:
“To punish failure is another way to encourage mediocrity because mediocrity is what fearful people will always settle for.”
The Limitless Leader must heed this warning with much attention. Mediocrity in any enterprise is to be avoided and eliminated at all costs.
How do we change this mindset and understanding of failure?
As I see it, every time we learned something and we grew was when we failed. It started when we first learned to walk. We only learned because we fell, we failed. When we first learnt to ride that bike, we learned because we fell, we failed. That spirit of getting back up and our happiness of getting it once we learned, that’s the joy of failing.
The Limitless Leader must be consistent in reminding themselves the true spirit of failing and ensure that they communicate this to their teammates regularly. There is a distinction between Mistakes and Failure from my perspective. Mistake is when you Miss Taking the actions required once you failed. It is important to clarify this, a mistake should not be tolerated because one has not learned from one’s failure.
‘Loss is nothing else but change, and change is Nature’s delight.’
