Harmony vs. Balance

Consider this, the WHO (World Health Organization says that people who work 55+ hours a week have a 35% higher risk of stroke and 17% higher risk of dying from heart disease.

Let’s combine this to a study conducted by Porter and Nohria on how much time leading CEOs work and on what. It appears that CEOs work on average 62.5 hours per week. If we pair this reality to the Law of The Picture which states that people will do what they see, it is not surprising to see how a person who wants to climb the corporate ladder will inherently work the same amount of hours. or at least attempt to do so.

The idea of work life balance started in the 80’s and a 2015 study found that only 45% of employees stated that they had work-life balance. It appears that work-life balance is eluding us. Here’s another perspective to consider. What if instead of work-life balance we aim for work-life harmony?

The Limitless Leader understands that there are things under one’s control and others that are squarely outside of our control. Trying to achieve balance is like attempting to walk a tight rope while flying objects come at you incessantly. The Limitless Leader knows that some occasions will necessitate longer hours of work, where achieving balance will be difficult or just plainly impossible. If full balance cannot be achieved ( we know that the Limitless Leader abhors the word impossible ) perhaps we should not aim a balance but rather harmony. Just like a great song will have its ups and downs on a musical scale, the Limitless Leader will look at their agenda over time and ensure that harmony is attained.

One of the passages that caught my attention in Meditations:

I’ve often found it astonishing how everyone loves himself more than anyone else, and yet attaches less importance to his own opinion of himself than he does to what others think of him. We place more weight on our neighbours’ opinions of us than we do on our own.

Marcus Aurelius – Meditations – 12.4

This thought existed in 168 CE and continues to prevail today. So, as we head into the weekend, take time to think about yourself and give yourself some well deserved ‘ME’ time.
