How To Provide Efficient and Effective Feedback

One key principle of the Limitless Leader is to always be serving. The Limitless Leader achieves this by maintaining the spirit of Servant Leadership. 

To serve her team effectively and efficiently, the Limitless Leader must sharpen her skills in providing feedback.

Here are two ways, I have found to be effective and efficient during my Limitless Leader Journey.

The Positive/Reinforcing Feedback

What. Why.

You state the following:

What you observe them doing right.

Why that behaviour is the correct one and how it benefits the team, the organization, the customer.

The Constructive/Corrective Feedback

What. What. Why.

You state the following:

What you observed them doing.

What they should have done.

Why that behaviour is more efficient.

There are 2 key factors you must take into account in providing effective and efficient feedback.

  1. Time
  2. Location

In order for the feedback to be effective the timing has to be as close as possible to the behaviour you have observed.

As for the location, it depends on the type of feedback you want to deliver. 

When providing Reinforcing Feedback you would aim to do it as publicly as possible. This will accomplish 2 things, your teammate will be recognized in front of his peers, in my experience that has always been a plus; it will also help reinforce the behaviours you are seeking for your other teammates to strive to do. 

If you are providing the Constructive Feedback, I would recommend it to be done as privately as you can. 

The maxim still stands true today.

Praise in Public. Correct in Private.
