The Shoreline of Ignorance
May 02, 2021
I am told that physicist John Archibald Wheeler said:
"As your island of knowledge increases, so does the shoreline of ignorance."
Consider this, in a game of chess based on the Shannon number, after 3 moves by each player there are 119 000 000 games possible. On the 4th move by bot the players, we are looking at over 84 billions possible games.
This truly illustrates the axiom from the physics world. And when you consider that chess is a finite game, with a definite set of rules and a set board, compared to the Limitless Leader’s Journey. A journey which is ,in contrast, plagued with ever changing rules and an infinite playground.
Simon Sinek stated in his book, The Infinite Game, that business leaders need to adopt an infinite mindset as the business game is not finite. So is the Limitless Leader’s Journey.
When you consider this perspective , you realize that the innate pressure you put on yourself to make the right decision every time is uncalled for. The pressure that you must be in the know of everything is ridiculous.
That’s why the first principle of maintaining the mindset of the eternal apprentice is key. As you move forward and grow into your Journey, your shores of ignorance will widen and you will need to find comfort in this ignorance. You must find joy in the learning.
The Limitless Leader, in their journey, realizes that Marshall Goldsmith said it best:
“What got you here, won’t get you there.”
