Why Purpose is Essential

It has been said that purpose is necessary to drive our actions. That it is tied to our limbic brain and hence it drives our behaviours. From individuals to corporations, many have pursued to define their ‘Why’. The exercise is valuable and essential for the Limitless Leader to become resilient in their Journey. After all, if you do not know your ‘Why’ what will drive you not to give up? Clearly defining your ‘Why’ will allow the Limitless Leader to see the potential options to overcome challenges and obstacles.
When the Why is Strong, the How will show itself.

On the other hand, Maslow’s model tells us that we first must ensure we respond to our needs prior to moving into our Growth. Can the Limitless Leader truly define their ‘Why’ if they have not attended to their basic needs ( Physiological, Safety Needs, Belonging and Love Needs, Esteem Needs )? In our Western society, we have the luxury, for the majority of us, to have these needs met. However, if you read the stories of our Ukrainian brothers and sisters, they have been fighting to fill these basic needs for more than 2 months now.
When we witness the courage displayed by those who stayed to fight and by those who fled to survive ( it takes courage to uproot yourself and land in another country because you had to, not because you chose to), we come to observe that something else drives this courage. Clearly, we see that the ‘Why’ allows this to happen. As a Limitless Leader, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, clearly knows his why when he told the United States: ‘I don’t need a ride‘
The Limitless Leader understands that they should clarify their purpose first, before they can set the purpose for their family, community or company.
The Limitless Leader understands that their stated Purpose will change and evolve in their Journey, it’s part of their growth. With time, experience and wisdom, the Purpose will become clearer and somewhat simpler; but it is in each Limitless Leader’s journey to uncover it. And each journey is different. No set timelines, no specific secret sauce, it is about discovery of oneself. How does the Limitless Leader proceed to identify their ‘Why’. Here are 3 steps to start the Journey if you have not attempted yet.
3 Steps into identifying your Why
- Identify your values.
- What do you stand for and Why?
- Identify your actions.
- What do you do consistently to add value?
- What actions bring you joy?
- Identify who you affect.
- Who benefits from the actions you take?
